Good Things Come To Those Who WaitPosted: 2009-11-06
Yes, it's an old adage but one that still
rings true. In 1960, at the beginning of the NFL's love affair with TV, the
Chicago Cardinals moved to St. Louis and I immediately declared, "This is my
team." And even though many subsequent seasons of failure gave me reason to
question that fateful decision, I still stuck with the Cardinals, year in and
year out. Remember, we're talking about a franchise that was so bad it managed
to turn legendary football coach Bud Wilkinson into a loser when he embarked on
an ill-fated attempt to right the sinking ship in St. Louis! Years later, owner
Bill Bidwell relocated the team to Arizona but the losing continued, and I
wondered if I would ever see the Cards involved in a meaningful postseason
football game before I was lowered into the ground. Then, lo and behold, a
miraculous late-season run by the Redbirds in 2008 saw them claim the NFC
Championship -- and a resulting berth in the Super Bowl, their first-ever
appearance. Arizona lost to Pittsburgh, of course, but the mere fact that they
had achieved what several other NFL teams have yet to experience led me to
believe that ANYTHING is possible if you wait long enough. That belief was
reinforced just last weekend when something else occurred that I ' d been hoping
to see for many decades...
COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF THOUGHTSPosted: 2009-10-14
You and I both know we won't see the despised BCS dispatched in favor of a true CFB Playoff system for quite a few years. So, in the meantime, it doesn't hurt to toss around potential playoff scenarios in case the miraculous should one day occur.
THE GREAT COLLEGE FOOTBALL BOWL SCAMPosted: 2009-08-26
As the 2009 college football season draws near, fans will once again be denied the spectacle of seeing a true National Champion crowned on the playing field. Oh sure, we've got the BCS but what a disaster that's turned out to be. Last year was worse than usual: two teams with a legitimate claim to participating in a championship game - Utah and Texas - were not awarded the opportunity to prove their worth (Utah was the only unbeaten team in the FBS while Texas beat BCS finalist Oklahoma earlier in the season at Dallas).
